April 20-24, 2026
Welcome to the fifth edition of Astrobites x Earth Week! This year, we’re focusing on sustainable instrumentation: How can we as astronomers build the infrastructure that we need to do amazing science, while still taking our impact on the climate into account? To follow this discussion, check out the articles listed below, and to contribute, please use the hashtag #AstrobitesxEarthWeek2026 on social media!
As always, our goals are to uplift the people we work with, foster community around climate advocacy, and center on doing this work from a place of hope. Thank you for joining us!
Post 1: How to build a telescope sustainably with Dr. Laurane Fréour. Dr. Fréour is a postdoc at the University of Vienna, and she talked to us about designing the proposed Wide-field Spectroscopic Telescope with the climate in mind.
Post 2: The Final Frontier for the Circular Economy. Earth’s orbit is filled with leftovers from human spaceflight. On top of that, the new space race brings us ever more out of Earth’s atmosphere. How can we start thinking about reusability for our time in outer space?
Post 3: Coming soon…
